Training for Leaders
Why mental health should matter to you

cost to the Australian economy each year
Far from being “something fluffy that only millennials care about” — as a now-former business leader once said to me — the mental health of your staff actually matters. If nothing else, the numbers above should show you the current impact of mental ill-health on the economy and workplace.
Creating a mentally healthy workplace has many benefits for both employers and employees. Any half-decent workplace should support individual mental health, as it can reduce absenteeism, increased employee engagement, and overall group productivity.
Promoting good mental health in the workplace has never been more important than it is right now.
Research by BeyondBlue and TNS Social Research has shown:
- 91% of workers say it’s important to work in a mentally healthy workplace
- BUT only 52% agreed that their workplace fits that description
- 21% of employees indicated that they’d taken time off in the past 12 months due to stress, anxiety, depression, or feeling mentally unwell
Those who consider their workplaces to be mentally healthy are four times less likely to take time off work for mental health conditions, compared to their counterparts in mentally unhealthy workplaces.
Which type of organisation would you rather your staff feel they work with?
